Isochronous mode and IRT provide for reliable and quick connection thanks to PROFINET. This maintains synchronisation between a system's input, network, CPU processing, and output cycles—even in the presence of concurrent TCP/IP traffic. Fast cycle times offered by PROFINET ensure excellent precision and product quality while increasing machine and plant efficiency.

By using PROFINET, the range of equipment and systems that can be implemented is no longer limited. Within a single network, many controllers can communicate with their assigned field devices. Since all IP addresses are useable, practically any number of field devices can be added to a PROFINET network.
By employing 100 Mbit/s in full duplex mode, PROFINET surpasses previous fieldbuses in data rate by a significant margin. This suggests that there should be no problems with sending additional plant data over TCP/IP in addition to the process data. Thus, PROFINET simultaneously serves the combined industrial needs for high-speed input/output data transfer and large-volume data transmission for additional application areas. Even large-scale data transfers, such as those from cameras, have no detrimental effects on the precision and speed of IO data transmission thanks to PROFINET techniques.
Installing ring topology redundancy helps increase plant availability. In addition to external switches, integrated PROFINET connections can also be used to create media redundancy. The media redundancy protocol (MRP) can be used to achieve 200 ms reconfiguration times. This keeps the plant from stopping in the event that contact is lost in a single ring system area and enables the slow completion of any necessary maintenance or repairs.
In motion control applications, PROFINET with IRT in ring topologies offers improved media redundancy for planned duplication (MRPD). MRPD operates without the need for reconfiguration time in a bumpless mode. Even in the case of a communication failure (such a cable break), the process can continue unhindered.

PROFINET's "system redundancy" function, supported by SINAMICS S120, enables it to be connected to high-availability systems, like the SIMATIC S7-400H with two controllers. There is no hardware needed to make the connection. Complex automation operations in the process industry require robust communication with a high-availability system because plant uptime and control system redundancy are critical. There is always access to the SINAMICS S120 for both high-availability system controllers. The other controller assumes control in the event of a cable break or CPU malfunction, guaranteeing uninterrupted communication.
